Since 2000, SPIRE scholars have transitioned into academic positions at institutions across the country. The SPIRE program also results in a greater proportion of underrepresented scientists transitioning into academic faculty positions as compared to national data. These outcomes were recently published in the special issue Broadening Participation of the journal CBE Life Sciences Education, September 1, 2016. The study examines the factors that predict career outcomes which include intended career track and number of scientific publications. The study also shows that the economic downturn of 2008 did not have a negative impact on the number of job applications the scholars’ submitted nor the types of academic positions the scholars’ attained.
