Former SPIRE scholar wins teaching award
Meredith Defelice (Rosser) recently won the Paul M. Althouse Outstanding Teaching Award in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Penn State University. Defelice was also recently promoted to Senior Lecturer. Defelice uses a variety of teaching approaches with undergraduate students including animations, videos, guided inquiry, and case studies connected to real-world examples. She teaches Biochemistry, Genetics, and has re-designed several laboratory based courses to be more inquiry-based.
Defelice stated that "the research training that I received as a SPIRE postdoctoral fellow has been invaluable to me as an educator so that I can help develop the next generation of scientists."
Defelice was a SPIRE scholar from 2003-2007 and published 10 research articles with her SPIRE mentor, Dr. Doug Cyr, in the Department of Cell Biology and Physiology at UNC's School of Medicine.
