Several SPIRE scholars were honored at the Annual Postdoctoral Recognition Ceremony held on November 17, 2011 sponsored by UNC Chapel Hill’s Office of Postdoctoral Affairs. Dr. Karl Castillo won a Research Excellence award for his research on the effects of climate change on marine coral growth in Belize. Each recipient receives a monetary award to be used towards conference travel, research materials, and/or engagement in other scholarly activities.

Drs. Laurel Rodgers and Justin Shaffer received awards for Excellence in Mentoring Undergraduates sponsored by UNC’s Office of Undergraduate Research.

Drs. Jenny Tenlen, Michael Bruno, Victoria Newton, Justin Shaffer Christina Swanson, and Jennifer Thomson were also recognized for their participation in DNA Day, research ethics course facilitation, and coaching/mentoring of students involved in UNC Chapel Hill’s Initiative for Maximizing Student Diversity (IMSD).
